Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can affect people who have gone through very frightening or distressing experiences, in their childhood or as an adult. When someone has PTSD, their brain struggles to move past the trauma, making them feel like they are still in danger even when they're safe. This can lead to intense anxiety, depression, emotional numbness, flashbacks, and difficulty sleeping or concentrating. They might feel constantly on edge or irritable, which can make everyday activities feel overwhelming, and lead to a feeling of being stuck.
One effective way to help people with PTSD is a therapy called Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI). It works by helping the brain to process the traumatic memories in a new way, while in a calm, relaxed, a safe state, so that the brain no longer triggers the same intense emotional response.
It involves a subtle approach. By guiding the eyes in specific movements, the Psychotherapist gently creates a separation between the past traumatic event and the current moment, without the need to discuss the event. In this deeply relaxed state, the brain can reprocess the memory, leading to a less threatening storage of the memory and reducing its emotional intensity. This therapy is typically swift, often resulting in a change in the traumatic memory after 1 to 3 sessions.
By using MEMI, people with PTSD can reduce the emotional impact of their traumatic memories, helping them to feel calmer and more in control. This approach offers hope and healing for those who have been struggling with the effects of trauma, and a path to beginning to create the future they most want to live.
